Herstory in the Classroom
Empathy-Based Memoir Writing Workshops
for 3rd - 12th Graders
Since 2011, our Herstory in the Classroom program has provided memoir-writing workshops to K–12 public school students. Working at the intersection of personal storytelling, narrative mastery, social-emotional learning, and empowerment, our empathy-based community writing approach is tailored to each grade level, creating a powerful body of student work while nurturing empathy, personal agency, narrative mastery, and a strong sense of community.

Our Herstory-trained facilitators—many of whom are themselves alumni of Herstory writing workshops, whose lives have changed through our programs—model a strengths-based approach grounded in kindness, deep listening, and trust. This approach to writing uncovers the goodness and care within each participant and writing circle while sparking each young writer’s imagination. Whether in English, Spanish, or Haitian Creole, students find the language of their hopes and dreams, building trust and healing day by day as their voices are heard and their resilience comes into view.

Herstory in the Classroom also creates young leaders. Students who have written in Herstory in the Classroom workshops have brought their stories to school boards, legislators, human rights activists, and human services providers, as well into curricula in other districts, showing them their voices matter and deepening their sense of agency.
