Shaping Spaces: Memoirs of Disability Brilliance and Resistance
Shaping Spaces honors the unique perspectives, wisdom, and ingenuity of people with disabilities, who must continually navigate a world not shaped to their needs. Offered in partnership with Stony Brook University, this workshop brings together community members, students, and undergraduate interns to write about their journey of disability, including psychological and chronic health conditions. Faced with a society that often overlooks or attempts to diminish people with disabilities, participants use memoir writing to resist the narratives that others spin for them and to create new ones, thus helping to reshape their world and advocate for their place in it. Exploring their experiences together allows them to share ways they overcome challenges and to draw insight and inspiration from each other while producing memoir that speaks to the need to remake our world to accommodate all.
