Upon joining a Herstory workshop, each new writer is helped to find a “Page One Moment” that will open into the larger story that she wishes to tell. We make sure that this moment feels safe enough to allow her to stay with it and powerful enough to keep her writing week after week, or even year after year, for as long as she needs to complete her project.
When she returns the next week, she will read aloud her “Page One Moment,” so that we can determine what she needs to do next – whether she will backstitch into a memory or jump forward to another moment in time. She will write with the mystery of not knowing whether her backstitch will last for a paragraph or two or extend for one hundred pages or more. Each new piece of writing she presents will propel the whole group forward in discussing what works, and what doesn’t work and why.
We have no set lesson plans, but determine our discussions around each person’s needs. We keep our weekly groups small enough so that each writer has an opportunity to read that week’s new work at each meeting. Thus no one gets stuck, and no one is kept waiting.
Because we read aloud, writers who feel insecure with the mechanics of spelling and grammar can work on equal footing with those who have written all their lives. It is the power of storytelling we are fostering, with each new way of going about it contributing to our understanding of what calls a reader to come on our journey. The joy is in the diversity of the voices, each one becoming more itself as the writing moves along.
Some women come only for a few months, to tell a particular story that needs to be told. Others come year after year, completing book-length projects. Although the making of art is our mission, healing is often an important by-product, as stories relegated to silence begin to be heard. As we guide each writer into bringing her memories to life on the page, she discovers a forgotten and often more lovable self she had banished or left far behind.
Each of our Herstory facilitators has been carefully trained in our method.
New members are always welcomed into our ongoing Herstory groups, so that there is a continual cross-fertilization among those just starting and those who have been crafting their stories for a while.
Que esperar en un taller semanal de Herstory
Al integrarse a un taller de escritura Herstory, a cada escritora nueva se le ayuda encontrar su “Momento de Página Uno”, el cual abrirá el portal a la historia más grande que desea contar. Nos cercioramos de que este momento es lo suficientemente seguro para la escritora quedarse en él y lo suficientemente poderoso para mantenerla escribiendo semana tras semana, o inclusive año tras año, o por el tiempo que ella necesite para completar su proyecto.
Cuando la nueva escritora regresa la semana entrante, ella leerá en voz alta su “Momento de Página Uno”, para que determinemos lo que ella necesita hacer después – ya sea regresar al pasado a través de recuerdos o brincar hacia adelante a otro momento en el tiempo. Ella escribirá con el misterio de no saber si su próximo paso le tomará un párrafo, o se extenderá por cientos de páginas más. Cada pieza de escritura nueva que ella presente impulsará al grupo entero en discutir qué funciona y qué no funciona y el por qué.
No trabajamos con lecciones pre-preparadas, sino determinamos nuestras discusiones según las necesidades de cada escritora. Mantenemos nuestros grupos semanales pequeños para que cada escritora tenga oportunidad de leer su nueva escritura en el taller. De manera que todas leen.
El hecho que leemos en voz alta permite que las escritoras quienes puedan sentirse inseguras sobre su ortografía y gramática puedan trabajar desde el mismo plano que mujeres que han estado escribiendo todas sus vidas. Es el poder del contar historias que estamos cultivando, explorando maneras que puedan contribuir a nuevas maneras en que un lector o una lectora nos acompañe en nuestra jornada. El gusto está en la diversidad de voces, cada una volviéndose más única conforme avanza la escritura.
Algunas mujeres vienen solo unos meses para contar una historia particular que necesitan contar. Otras vienen año tras año, completando projectos de libros. La creación de arte es nuestra misión y muchas veces la sanación resulta de este proceso, conforme historias relegadas al silencio empiezan a salir al aire y ser escuchadas.
Conforme guíamos a cada escritora a que pueda hacer que sus recuerdos cobren vida sobre la página, ella descubre una versión de sí querible y muchas veces olvidada que había dejado atrás.
Cada una de las facilitadoras de Herstory ha sido entrenada cuidadosamente en nuestro método.
Nuevas miembras siempre son bienvenidas en nuestros grupos de Herstory, de manera que siempre hay una bonita mezcla de mujeres recién empezando y mujeres que han estado creando sus obras por mucho tiempo ya.
