Herstory Writers Workshop is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the mission of helping women find expression and power as together they discover, write and share their life stories. Founded by writer Erika Duncan in 1996, Herstory happens in public libraries,
community workshops, cultural centers, high school classrooms and
correctional facilities, among other venues.
Over the years, women from all walks of life – domestic workers and foundation heads, judges and housewives, adolescents and grandmothers, recent immigrants and native Long Islanders, those incarcerated and those free, those with little formal education and those with
advanced degrees – have come to Herstory, believing in its power to bring about real change in individuals and ultimately in our world, by teaching them how to turn their intimate stories into powerful works of art. Herstory offers quality writing instruction to any woman
wishing to write, and in the process helps build bridges that lead to greater connections, compassion and healing between women and
across communities.
