In 2010, VOICES: Memoirs from Herstory Inside Suffolk County’s Correctional Facilities became mandated reading for every incoming officer to graduate from the county’s correctional academy, as a requirement to work in the county’s two jails. Riverhead Correctional Facility’s Department of Rehabilitation purchased 250 copies. 50 Officers attended the first training— 42 men and 8 women— to resoundingly positive evaluations. There have since been two more trainings as this has become a permanent part of the curriculum.
