Latinas Write/Escriben es la primer revista literaria bilíngüe que presenta memorias escritas por Latinas de los condados de Suffolk y Nassau. Una mini-antología de memorias-en-desarollo y piezas más cortas elaboradas por miembras del taller de Herstory para mujeres en español, la colección invita a lectores a experimentar otras culturas y otros tiempos al igual que la realidad bicultural que  inmigrantes viven en este país cada día. De vuelta a la página y aterrice en una cárcel mexicana, en medio de un temblor en Guatemala, en un baño sucio dentro de una mansión opulenta de los Hamptons, en una clase de kínder alienante, y/o en un pueblo mexicano pintoresco que esta enmarañado con historias que celebran los lazos de amor entre muchachas y sus padres y abuelos y su determinación ante un país nuevo y sorprendemente brusco.
 Las versiones originales de las historias han sido editadas solamente en cuestión de ortografía y puntuación. Las editoras de Latinas Write/Escriben – facilitadoras de Herstory Latina, Sandra Dunn y Silvia Heredia – deliberadamente no hicieron cambios en la sintaxis, vocabulario o inclusive gramática, para que así la voz de cada autora pudiera ser escuchada lo más claro posible. Sin importar que las autoras sean de Argentina, Guatemala, la República Dominicana, México o Perú, sus historias son universales, permitiéndonos trascender los límites de la geografía y conectarnos con otras vidas de manera más autentica y profunda, una que está enraízada en respeto, apreciación y unidad.
Latinas Write/Escriben debutó en la primavera del 2006; una segunda edición se publicó en agosto del 2007. Con el mapa demográfico y cultural de Long Island cambiando tan rápidamente, empezar a cultivar y compartir estas historias de las vidas de mujeres es una parte importante de recuperar y resaltar experiencias y contribuciones de todas las mujeres trabajadoras e inmigrantes. Es nuestra esperanza que estas historias serán publicadas en una tercera edición de Latinas Write/Escriben y serán una avenida directa para crear mayores puentes entre mujeres y mayor comprensión entre comunidades.

Latinas Write/Escriben is the first bilingual literary magazine to feature memoir writing by Latinas in Suffolk and Nassau counties. A mini-anthology of memoirs-in-progress and shorter works crafted by members of Herstory’s workshops for Spanish-speaking women, the collection invites readers to experience other cultures and other times as well as the bicultural reality that immigrants in this country live every single day. Turn the pages and land in a Mexican jail, a Guatemalan earthquake, a filthy bathroom in an opulent mansion in the Hamptons, an alienating kindergarten classroom and a picturesque Mexican village – intertwined with stories that celebrate the ties of love between young girls and their parents and grandparents and self-determination in a new, surprisingly harsh country.
The original versions of the stories have been edited only for mechanics such as spelling and punctuation. The editors of Latinas Write/Escriben – Talleres de Herstory en españolfacilitators Sandra Dunn and Silvia Heredia – deliberately refrained from making changes in syntax, vocabulary and even grammar, so that the voice of each author can be heard as clearly as possible. Whether the authors are from Argentina, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Mexico or Peru, their stories are universal, allowing us to transcend the limits of geography and connect with each other on a more authentic, profound plane, one that is rooted in respect, appreciation and unity.
Latinas Write/Escriben debuted in Spring 2006; a second issue was published in August 2007. With the demographics and cultural fabric of Long Island changing so quickly, to begin to capture and then release the stories of these women’s lives is an important part of reclaiming the experiences and contributions of all working and immigrant women. It is our hope that these stories will be published in a third issue of Latinas Write/Escriben, as a means for building greater bridges between women and greater understanding across communities.
