Workshop Description:
Herstory’s very popular day-long retreat led by Herstory Founder and artistic director E. Duncan brings together women from near and far. (Easily accessible by car, bus or train (5 miles from Ronkonkoma LIRR hub train station.
This workshop is an outgrowth of our annual Dialogues Across Differences at SUNY Stony Brook where women have met around the theme of moving from silence to having a voice. Here seasoned Herstory participants who have been working with the Herstory technique for years and Herstory facilitators working in our prison and other projects work side by side with women who might never have written before, seeking help and inspiration for putting into a form the stories that have been lurking in their hearts.
Experience first-hand the uniqueness of this workshop network that has helped to give voice to women who might never have come to know one another if not for the bonds they developed in shaping their tales. Experience the magic of the approach that brings together on level ground women with little formal education and university professors, women on welfare and heads of foundations, child care workers and political leaders. Across racial, ethnic and economic differences, their stories bring them into one another’s worlds, despite the outward differences that so frequently pull people apart.
The day-long format will give new participants a chance to work side by side with women who have been writing with Herstory for years, to develop their ideas in the morning, to begin writing during the lunch break and to then have immediate feedback in the afternoon. Do bring laptops or writing tablets. Lunch may be brought or bought in the neighborhood. Coffee and tea will be available.
